Another thing is that discolored teeth can be of two broad types, depending on what caused the yellowing in the first place. Things like tobacco [whether you smoke or chew it], drinking coffee, tea, or red wine and a diet of highly pigmented foods such as cherries and blueberries lead to what dentists like to call ‘extrinsic’ stains.
What dentists call intrinsic stains are those that are the result of deeper rooted factors such as the usage of the antibiotic tetracycline when one is still too young, trauma to the teeth or simply as a result of the aging process itself. Overexposure to fluoride is also a common cause of extrinsic staining of the teeth.
Thorough cleanings by a dentist or hygienist will remove most external staining caused by food and tobacco. Using a whitening toothpaste can also help remove these surface stains between dental visits. If stains have been present for years, you may need to have your teeth professionally whitened to remove these more stubborn external stains.
Intrinsic yellowing, on the other hand often requires special procedures like bleaching, bonding or even crowning, depending on what your doctor or dentist recommends. He or she will take a good look at the present state of your teeth and decide on the best treatment method for you. Of course this also depends on the kind of results you are aiming for.
You can either whiten you teeth at home yourself or visit a dentist if the discoloration is particularly severe. Both methods use tooth-bleaching gels that oxidize out the stain but the at-home method is more popular today and can be very effective if well done. Your dentist will make an impression of your teeth and make a custom-fitted mold, which you fill with a whitening gel and wear up to two hours daily or at night for about two weeks. Many whitening kits used in America today contain a solution of 10-15% carbamide peroxide.
You can also decide to opt for the full professional treatments at the hand of your dentist. Just remember that it will cost you far more, and will require more frequent and lengthier visits to the dentist. Your dentist will use an oxidizer on your teeth, along with a special type of light every few minutes. The special light serves to activate the operation of the oxidizing agent.
It's very likely that your teeth feel sore and sensitive for a few days after the operations -usually less than 4 days. Your gums and maybe even your whole mouth could feel sore too but there shouldn’t be anything to worry about.
But please remember not to attempt tooth whitening on kids below 16 years of age. By that age they still have enlarged tooth nerves which could become irritated and damaged.
